Happy New Year! I figured since we're slowly getting closer to this event that I'd create a space for updates/thought on the process of getting this together. I want to be as transparent as possible with pricing and how much hosting one of these events costs. I'm just one guy that works a 9-5 that loves fixed gear bikes, so bare with me as I navigate this process. If you follow along on Instagram, you know I've reached out to a private property owner with a newly laid asphalt track to see if that might be a possible site for the event. Since it's on private property I wouldn't need any city permits or insurance (race at your own risk type of thing). The owner denied my request so the race will need to be hosted on city streets. In order to do that, the city requires a road closure permit along with event insurance. I reached out to a contact that hosts mountain bike races to see how he handles the insurance side of things. Turns out USA Cycling offers what we need, but they also require a permit/fee along with a per rider fee for insurance. Obviously I'm trying to keep registration fees as low as I can without going into personal debt so I'm going to list a price breakdown (as I understand it) below. I wanted to host this race with 3 people, 5 people, 10 people, but since there is going to be some fees associated with insurance/permits we might have to have a minimum number of riders to make this event viable. I have started an event registration page, but waiting on Outside.com to finalize the details and approve.
Current price breakdown
USA Cycling Fees
USA Cycling permit - $95
USA Cycling Insurance minimum - $300 or 5.99 per rider whichever is higher
USA Cycling Event Official - Free (this is being held as a non-competitive event so you don't need to be a USAC member but it also won't contribute to any USAC point standings)
Chattanooga City Fees
Chattanooga Road Closure permit fee - $100
Barricades as required by the city - $? (will find out once the permit comes back)
Once the event registration page is approved, I will post a link that will contain some more information/course layout. Love y'all.
